[mood | frustrated]

I've snuck away for a few minutes on the pretence that I am writing to Mercy about Bill, which I shall do in a second, but first I must relieve my mind:

ELIZABETH LOVEGOOD IS DRIVING ME MAD.

There. I don't think I can bring myself to say that even to Mercy, because Elizabeth has just watched her first born son coughing up, it looked like, every ounce of fluid he had in his body. And perhaps not only from the physical body only. Poor little boy. And I felt so for her last night when we couldn't get into the city, and Isaac would never say that anyone was dying until they were cold in their grave, but close enough to.

There's all kinds of whisperings and carrying ons here. This mess seems to be like an onion. We peel a layer off and underneath that is the layer where Erasmus Weasley is haunting the boy and under that who knows, but nothing good I can only imagine.

And I try to feel for Elizabeth, I mean, I do feel for her, but she's one of those women who does everything possible to get in the way of anything actually getting done about anything at all. Including her son.

Isaac went up to school to get Bill to Mungo's today and was supposed to send an express from the hospital once all was settled, which he hasn't done yet, which means everything isn't settled yet, which means something is more wrong than it was before. But, I suppose, not wrong enough that Mungo's has got in touch instead, so he at least arrived there with Bill, and now what?

It's a small mercy at least that Lizzie is seeing to Arthur today. She's clearly worried about Bill, and as a mother I would want to be there too. But of course even Isaac who loves every ex-Weasley beyond all reason can see why that's not a good idea, not when sorting it out is going to involve talking to the Malfoys. And that awful Doctor van Rensselaer who they call on in the tougher cases. Well, she can probably do more for Arthur than Bill at the moment.

I hope there's news soon.

[mood | alarmed]

It's really good that the demon is gone and that the teachers and Miss Peverell are good at getting rid of demons. But I don't think they were really telling us everything. There is not even a Defence teacher left. I am going to ask my Dad about demons.

Everyone is upset that there is going to be no Quidditch and no Ball, but anyway first years don't go to the Ball. And I don't think they do the dances Silvia knows from her family and her Company, which I want to learn. And I think some people did know about the party but not everyone like Professor Goyle said. If Ed didn't know and Miss Watkins and Miss Kyteler and Miss McGonagall and everyone on the Inquisition then it must have been a big secret.

I thought Lew was most upset of everyone about the Quidditch except maybe McGonagall who is his new best mate now that Bilius is crazy, but now I don't think so. There was a big fight before Ed and Mr Gresham came down to the cricket. Miss Device hit Mr Wood out of nowhere and no one wanted to stop her. Some people thought she was too scary, but most people just want to hit Mr Wood themselves because the party was his fault and maybe he asked the demon to go. (But I don't think so, because otherwise Professor van Rensselaer and Miss Popescu would know.) Mr Flitwick who is a Ravenclaw Prefect broke it up. He is very small like me but Ed says he is very strong and a good bowler because he is part Goblin aside from being a Charms Expert so I was not surprised.

The cricket was not as fun as last week because some of the good players like Lord Mr Malfoy and the other Miss Kyteler are gone with Silvia and Dory for lots of weddings. And Bilius is crazy but Ed said he is sick as well. And Dursley is even more rotten than usual. Maybe Mr Flitwick can bowl to us though, then we will get good fast.

[mood | annoyed]

I don't reckon there's going to be much chance of anything fun for the rest of the year now. And it doesn't seem awfully fair either. I knew about Wood's party, a bit, although they were pretty good about keeping the secret. Maybe Bill told them I was on the Malfoys' side, helping enslave the world, or whatever the hell it is he thinks the rest of us are doing. Plus, Rosier really is Malfoy's cousin (officially even, by his actual Mum, not by our cousin Mercy) so if you're a nutter like Bill is and his Da was, I guess you wouldn't tell our dorm anything much.

Even if some of us did know, no one knew the Brown girl was going to be killed by a demon. No one knew Smith had a demon living in him! I know it's really sad, but I don't see how we all deserved a year's punishment. Not that I wish I'd gone. Ed is on a rampage. He tries to pretend he's not Dad, but he absolutely is, and Bill is in for it. And a second time as well, when Dad finds out. McGongall's awfully pleased he didn't go, he thinks his sister would be worse than Ed any day. We aren't testing that today.

One of the many fine things about Marcus's end is that Mercy should be able to come down much more often... )

[mood | contemptuous]

Lizzie just got a letter from the Aurors, and it turns out Marcus has died. Actually been killed, trying to pick a fight at the Malfoy estate. At least he improved that much from school: he was finally prepared to take on someone stronger than he was.

I know that this will be very very hard on Lizzie and the children, and Isaac is writing to poor Ed now, who is going to have to talk to them and to my own tonight. Sal, Lew and Hamish will all be upset if only for their cousins, and the shock too. Possibly even for the man himself: he was not even one quarter as terrible to anyone who he thought might tell Isaac about it. (Don't think that I didn't know this, Marcus Weasley. You weren't one inch the better man for selfishly preserving your cousin's good opinion.) And I do feel for them all; even Lizzie, who is the only one of us all who chose him freely for himself.

Except for him. I won't say this ever again, but: it couldn't have happened to a better person, I don't think.

[mood | impatient]

Bilius is still being a pill about this whole thing with Kat and Malfoy. I think it was rather daring of her to risk writing to a Malfoy, especially in order to get bat guano! Especially since their Pa is was is crazy. And Bilius needs to wake up and find bat guano in his bed every so often, just to keep everything even. I'm his cousin and one of his best mates, and even I know that. And now Kat is a Slytherin. She could have made Gryffindor, but I bet that she didn't even want to, after this week.

And I know his Pa has gone crazy and left and all, but he's not making anything easier on his family by being a prick to Malfoy. Rosier was pretty busy with Macmillan in the corner (I hope if that keeps going they go and do it in the fourth year dorm and out of the bloody common room, yuck), but he's already had the chance to cut Annie more than once. Maybe Rosier would go out of his way to do that anyway, he is sort of a snob, but even I felt like cutting Bilius tonight and he's my family. He's found another mate who is even more cocky than Bilius at his cockiest and they're going to be picking fights and getting hexed by Malfoy's friends (don't tell me that they'll keep cutting someone when they could curse them instead) instead of doing any Quidditch practice or sailing or anything, I just know it. Bilius shouldn't be sticking up for his Pa, his Pa is a crazy man.

The Hufflepuffs sure are noisy, but they know some good war cries. A couple of them have great pauses where we can chant against them. McGonagall tried to bet me a sickle that he'd get Seeker over me, but I'm not taking that bet. The only way I get near getting Seeker is if McGonagall goes out for Beater instead — it was him that knocked his sister off the broom last week, and Miss McGonagall is fast. But he won't, he knows he can get Seeker now that Miss Wood has left.

[mood | happy]

I'm a Hufflepuff! I don't actually know what that really means since the Hat didn't sing the song that everyone promised would explain everything. It didn't eat people either though. But being a Hufflepuff means being like Ed and Sal and living with them. Except the Gryffindors are living here too. But we have already learned some of our Hufflepuff songs, and there are going to be cricket and footy matches because there are a lot of kids here who know them. Ed has taught me already, because he says the Muggleborns shouldn't win every year even if they are nice.

Bilius should be in trouble, he and a horrible boy called Dursley jumped in the lake to attack a girl and you shouldn't hurt girls. Except Ed says it wasn't a girl, it was a boy who is going to be Lord Malfoy because his mum is Lady Malfoy, and you shouldn't hurt people who are lords either, or anyone, unless you were attacked first. Even Lewis is nicer than Bilius and Dursley. Bilius isn't even in trouble yet. I got thrown out of the boat but I got it up and tried to help people in. Another boy is gone though, but I didn't see him, maybe he wasn't in the boats?

There is a nice girl here called Silvia who has pretty hair. She is sad because she is not allowed to talk to another girl called Dory because of Dory's parents. But that is not right. We are allowed to talk to Kat and Bilius and Annie even though mum says their pa is Not Nice because that does not mean they are Not Nice (even though Bilius is a Bad Influence on Lewis). I am going to talk to Silvia so that she is not lonely without Dory and someone can talk to Dory and we will help them be friends again.

Hamish Diggory: unposted letter dated 29 August 1942, left in an envelope in the Diggory boatshed [Oct. 11th, 2006|01:52 pm]

Dear Ed,

If you find this after I have died in the boat tonight, I'm really really sorry. Also, I am sorry about whatever has happened to the boat. I know you put a lot of work into it her. But Lewis really wanted to go out on the boat, and he's been so sad about it. And he put a curse on my milk this morning so that if I told you my tongue would turn green.

Your brother,

Hamish Diggory
